Municipal Market Hall in Gdynia

The complex of market halls in Gdynia is one of the city's most important monuments of modernist architecture and one of the few examples of constructivism in Polish architecture. The complex was erected between 1935 and 1938 to a design by Jerzy Müller and Stefan Reychman.

Architecture

The complex consists of three parts: the largest fruit and vegetable hall connected in an L-shaped layout with the meat hall, and a separate fish hall. The main hall (the Arch Hall) stands out for its distinctive parabolic roof supported on two-hinged steel arches with ceramic infill in the Förster system.

Monument status

Entered into the register of monuments in 1983 (reg. no. 895).

Function

The building has continuously served the same commercial function since its construction. Fruit, vegetables, meats, cold cuts and fresh fish are sold here.
