Białowieża Forest

The Białowieża Forest is one of the last and largest fragments of the primeval lowland forest of Europe, stretching on both sides of the Polish-Belarusian border. The total area of the complex is about 1,500 km², of which just over 42% lies on the Polish side. In 1979 the area was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Location and surroundings

Its geographical centre is the village of Białowieża in the Hajnówka County (Podlaskie Voivodeship). The most strictly protected part lies within the boundaries of the Białowieża National Park.

Over 1,020 species of vascular plants, 59 species of mammals and more than 260 species of birds have been recorded here. Natural oak-hornbeam forests, coniferous forests and riparian woodlands occur.
