Augustów Forest

The Augustów Forest is a vast forest complex in north-eastern Poland, in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, extending also into Lithuania and Belarus. Its total area is about 160,000 ha, of which more than 114,000 ha lie in Poland.

Location and surroundings

It covers the counties of Augustów, Sejny and Suwałki. The natural gateway to the forest is Augustów.

Natural values

The tree stand is dominated by Scots pine (over 70%) with an admixture of spruce and deciduous species. The forest is crossed by the Rospuda, Blizna and Czarna Hańcza rivers, and among the woods lie lakes (including Wigry, Sajno, Necko, Studzieniczne) and peat bogs.
