Babia Góra (Diablak)

Location and surroundings

Babia Góra is the highest peak of the Żywiec Beskids and of the entire Western Beskids. Its summit, Diablak, stands at about 1,725 m above sea level (more recent measurements: 1,723.8 m) and lies on the Polish-Slovak border, in the municipalities of Zawoja (Sucha County) and Lipnica Wielka (Nowy Targ County).

Natural values

The massif is protected within Babia Góra National Park, established in 1954 and inscribed on the UNESCO list of biosphere reserves in 1977. It features a distinct altitudinal zonation of vegetation with the only natural alpine zone in the Beskids; over 600 species of vascular plants have been recorded here, along with numerous mosses and liverworts.
