Giewont

Location and surroundings

Giewont is a massif in the Western Tatras above Zakopane, within Tatra National Park. Its highest peak, Wielki Giewont, reaches 1,895 m above sea level. The massif's silhouette is associated with the figure of a sleeping knight and is one of the symbols of Zakopane.

What to see

A 15-metre iron cross, the destination of numerous pilgrimages, stands on the summit. The peak offers sweeping views of the Tatras and the Podhale region.

Attractions and hazards

The northern walls are under strict protection. The summit is particularly exposed to lightning strikes - on 22 August 2019, a lightning strike caused a tragedy here with fatalities; during storms the summit area and the metal cross must be strictly avoided.

Who it is for

The final stretch to the summit is exposed and secured with chains; it requires caution and good weather.
