Location and surroundings

Śnieżka, with an official height of 1,603.30 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) and the Sudetes, on the Polish-Czech border. On the Polish side it lies in Karpacz (Lower Silesian Voivodeship), within Karkonosze National Park.

Natural values

The summit is built of hornfels, resistant to weathering. A harsh climate prevails here - the average January temperature is about -7.8°C, with long-lasting snow cover.

What to see

On the summit stand the characteristic disc-shaped buildings of the meteorological observatory (IMGW, operating since 1974) and the 17th-century chapel of St Lawrence, where annual services are held on 10 August.

Who it is for

Numerous trails of varying difficulty; a popular family destination in summer, requiring proper preparation in winter.

Visiting

  • Red trail via the Okraj Pass or Równia pod Śnieżką (the Friendship Path).
  • Black trail via Karpacz; blue trail past Mały Staw.
  • The Czech Jubilejka (yellow) with 370 steps.
