Ślęża

Location and surroundings

Ślęża (718 m above sea level) is a prominent massif near Sobótka (Sobótka municipality, Wrocław County). Despite its moderate absolute height, its relative height exceeds 500 m, making it a landmark visible from afar.

Values and culture

For centuries the mountain served as a place of worship - it is associated with pre-Christian solar rites. Stone sculptures have survived here (including a bear, a monk and a maiden with a fish). Since 1954 the summit's surroundings have been protected as a landscape-geological-historical reserve. The massif is built, among others, of granite and gabbro (interpreted as an ophiolite).

What to see

On the summit stand a reinforced-concrete observation tower, a church (the Chapel of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and the PTTK Tourist House from the early 20th century.

Who it is for

Numerous trails of moderate difficulty; a popular year-round weekend destination.
