Nietoperzowa Cave

Nietoperzowa Cave is one of the best-known caves of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, located in the Będkowska Valley in the Jerzmanowice-Przeginia municipality. The total length of the cave is 1,047.7 m, with a vertical range of 55.1 m. It was formed in Upper Jurassic limestones.

Location and surroundings

The cave lies about 1 km from national road no. 94, near Jerzmanowice. The main south-western entrance is 5 m high and 5 m wide.

Natural and archaeological value

The cave is known above all as an Upper Palaeolithic site dated to about 38,000 years ago (a hunting camp). In the 19th century, during the extraction of sediments, about 4,000 cave bear canines were recovered. Inside there are stalactites, stalagmites and calcite dripstone formations.

Who it's for

The cave is lit and open all year round; a guide is on duty at the entrance. It has served as a film location, including for the film "With Fire and Sword" (1997).
