Dragon's Den

The Dragon's Den (Smocza Jama) is the best-known cave in Poland, located at the foot of Wawel Hill in Kraków. The entire system is 276 m long, and the tourist route open to visitors is much shorter. The main accessible corridor is 82 m long and comprises three chambers; the largest is 25 m long and up to 10 m high.

Location and surroundings

The cave is located within Wawel Hill in the centre of Kraków. The descent leads down winding stairs about 21 m long.

Highlights and legend

The cave is linked to the legend of the Wawel Dragon. In 1972 a sculpture "Wawel Dragon" by Bronisław Chromy was placed at the exit.

Who it's for

The cave has been open to visitors since 3 August 1918, after stairs and electric lighting were installed by Prof. Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz.
