Szachownica Cave

Szachownica Cave is a proglacial cave located in the Wieluń Upland, on Krzemienna Mountain - a small limestone hill covered with beech forest, in the village of Wapiennik. It forms a complex of five caves created by the destruction of one large cave during limestone quarrying. The total length of the corridors is about 1,000 m.

Location and surroundings

The cave is located in the Lipie municipality, in the Kłobuck county, within the Szachownica nature reserve established in 1978.

Natural value

It is a site of mass (over 1,000 individuals) winter hibernation of bats of many species, including the greater mouse-eared bat - one of the most important bat habitats on a European scale. In 2015-2016, works were carried out to secure the ceiling against collapse.

Who it's for

The cave is not a typical tourist attraction - it is a protected bat habitat. Access is restricted, especially during the hibernation period.

Practical information

The site is in a nature reserve; the rules for protecting bats must be respected.
