Mechowo Caves

The Mechowo Caves are the only natural cave in Gdańsk Pomerania, located in the village of Mechowo. The cave is 61 m long with a small vertical range; its entrances lie at an altitude of about 60 m above sea level. It formed in coarse-grained sandstones and conglomerates cemented with calcite.

Location and surroundings

The cave lies in the Puck commune, in Puck County. The oldest record of it dates from 1818, although it was known locally much earlier; in 1908 it was recognised by the Prussian authorities as a natural monument.

Natural values

Inside there are small stalactites, ribs and flowstone coatings, partly stained red by iron compounds. The cave formed through water seepage, erosion and human activity.
