Twardowski Cave

A large karst cave at Zakrzówek in the Kraków district of Dębniki, one of the longest caves of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. Coordinates about 50°02' N, 19°54' E, entrance at an altitude of about 215 m above sea level.

Characteristics

  • Length: 610 m, vertical range 16.8 m, depth 12.7 m
  • The Main Chamber over 30 m long, up to 10 m wide, 2-4 m high
  • Three entrances (the western one now filled in), a labyrinth of corridors

Legend and history

The name refers to the legendary master Twardowski, who was said to have conducted alchemical experiments here. The cave has been known since at least 1865; archaeological research since 1867.

Within Zakrzówek Park; a small free car park near Tyniecka Street. Access by Kraków public transport.
