Lake Hańcza lies in the East Suwałki Lake District, in the municipality of Przerośl (Suwałki County, Podlaskie Voivodeship), within the Suwałki Landscape Park. Villages on its shores include Stara Hańcza, Błaskowizna, Mierkinie and Przełomka. The Czarna Hańcza river flows through the lake.
It is the deepest lake in Poland and the deepest on the Central European Plain. Its maximum depth is about 108.5 m and its area is 311.4 ha. It is a ribbon lake of oligo-mesotrophic character with exceptional water clarity (visibility reaching up to 6 m). The shores are steep, in places strewn with erratic boulders. The entire lake is a nature reserve (since 1963) and in 1974 was included in the UNESCO Project Aqua programme.
A place valued by divers, nature lovers and anglers. Because of its reserve status, restrictions on use apply.
