Śniardwy

Location and surroundings

Śniardwy is the largest lake in Poland, located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in the counties of Mrągowo and Pisz, within the municipalities of Mikołajki, Pisz, Orzysz and Ruciane-Nida. It belongs to the Great Masurian Lakes system. Places on its shores include Okartowo, Nowe Guty, Niedźwiedzi Róg and Popielno.

Natural features

Area of about 113.4 km², maximum depth about 23.4 m, average about 5.8 m. The lake contains 8 islands and connects by canals with neighbouring bodies of water. It lies within the Masurian Landscape Park and the Natura 2000 area (bird protection).

Who it is for

A mecca for sailors and water tourists; because of its expanse and shallowness, its weather can be capricious.
