The "Cistercian Landscape Compositions of Rudy Wielkie" Landscape Park was established on 23 November 1993. It protects the natural values and cultural heritage shaped by the Cistercians in the upper Oder valley.
The park covers 49,387 ha, and its buffer zone 14,010 ha. It lies in the western part of the Silesian Voivodeship, including the municipalities of Racibórz, Rybnik, Czerwionka-Leszczyny, Knurów and Orzesze.
Forests occupy 58.4% of the area (relics of riparian and oak-hornbeam forests of the upper Oder valley), farmland 34%, and ponds 1.28%. The park preserves the landscape shaped by the Cistercians who arrived in 1258, as well as industrial heritage (18th-century forges and ironworks).
