Bieszczady National Park

The Bieszczady National Park, established in 1973, is the largest mountain national park in Poland (about 292 km²). It protects the nature of the Western Bieszczady, including the unique połoniny (montane meadows).

Location and surroundings

The park lies at the south-eastern edge of Poland, at the border with Ukraine and Slovakia, in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. Together with the parks on the Slovak and Ukrainian sides it forms the International Biosphere Reserve "Eastern Carpathians".

What to see / natural values

  • Połoniny - treeless, grassy Eastern Carpathian meadows above the tree line
  • Tarnica (1,346 m) - the highest peak of the Polish Bieszczady
  • Krzemień and Halicz
  • Rich fauna: bear, wolf, lynx, European bison, golden eagle
