Bartek Oak

The Bartek Oak is one of the most famous and oldest English oaks (Quercus robur) in Poland, growing in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. It is a symbol of the Świętokrzyskie region and one of the most recognisable monumental trees in the country.

Location and surroundings

The tree grows near the village of Bartków, by regional road no. 750 leading from Zagnańsk to Samsonów, within the Bartków forestry district (Zagnańsk Forest Inspectorate).

Natural value

  • Height: approx. 28.5 m (measurement from 2013)
  • Trunk circumference at a height of 1.3 m: approx. 9.85 m
  • Crown span: approx. 20 × 40 m
  • Age estimated by C. Pacyniak (1992) at approx. 654 years; formerly even 1,200 years were reported

Who it's for

An attraction for families, nature lovers and tourists visiting the Świętokrzyskie Mountains; an educational trail has been set up by the tree.

Practical information

Free admission, the site is accessible all year round. In 1934, in a competition chaired by Prof. Władysław Szafer, it was recognised as the "most magnificent tree in Poland".
