The Raciborski Yews

Two old common yews (Taxus baccata) growing in the village of Harbutowice. They were named in honour of Prof. Marian Raciborski (1863-1917), one of the pioneers of nature conservation in Poland.

Location and surroundings

The yews grow on the north-western slope of the Babica Range, in the village of Harbutowice in the Sułkowice commune.

Natural value

  • The larger (older) specimen – a female tree, girth approx. 3 m, height approx. 15 m; age according to C. Pacyniak's study (1992) approx. 667 years
  • The second specimen – a male tree, lower and younger
  • The age of the trees is generally estimated at approx. 700 years

Who it is for

An attraction for nature and dendrology enthusiasts as well as tourists in the Beskids.

The trees have been legally protected since 1934, and since 1954 they have had the status of a natural monument.
