The Chrobry Oak

The Chrobry Oak is one of the thickest and oldest English oaks in Poland, growing in the Lower Silesian Forest. It is formally located in the Lubusz Voivodeship, on the grounds of the Szprotawa Forest District.

Location and surroundings

The tree grows in the Szprotawa forestry area, near the village of Piotrowice.

Natural value

  • Trunk girth: approx. 1004 cm
  • Height: 26 m
  • Age according to the study by the Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Kórnik (2012): approx. 720 ± 40 years (the monument description stated 1000 years)

An attraction for nature and dendrology enthusiasts as well as tourists visiting the Lower Silesian Forest.

Practical information

In 2014 the tree was set on fire but survived. Acorns from the Chrobry Oak were blessed by John Paul II in 2004.
