Lake Dobczyckie (Dobczyce Reservoir)

Lake Dobczyckie is a dam reservoir created in 1986 by damming the waters of the Raba river with a dam 30 m high and 617 m long. The maximum area is about 10.65 km², the total capacity is 127 million m³, and the maximum depth reaches 28 m. The reservoir lies between Dobczyce and Myślenice, south of Kraków.

Functions

It is the most important drinking-water reservoir for Kraków - it covers about 55% of the city's demand. It also serves flood-control, energy (a hydroelectric plant with two Kaplan turbines) and fish-farming functions.

Tourism

For sanitary reasons, swimming in the reservoir is prohibited and access to the shores is restricted. The attractions, however, include viewpoints, a walk along the dam crest, and the nearby castle and open-air museum in Dobczyce. The reservoir is a place for observing water birds (grey heron, gulls, mute swans).
