Waterfall in Sopotnia Wielka

The waterfall in Sopotnia Wielka is the highest waterfall in the Polish Beskids, 10 m high, located at an altitude of about 620 m above sea level on the Sopotnia stream in the Żywiec Beskids. The water falls from a rock shelf about 15 m high, forming an evorsion pothole about 5 m deep below.

Location and surroundings

Located in the village of Sopotnia Wielka (Jeleśnia municipality). The stream bed is made of sandstone, and the banks are covered by natural oak forest. It is a rare example of a cataclinal waterfall (rock layers dipping in the same direction as the water flow). The site is a natural monument.

What to see

The highest Beskid waterfall, known and described since the early 18th century.

Who it is for

For tourists; beware of danger - strong whirlpools and sharp rock slabs at the bottom of the pothole.
