Tanew Rapids

The Tanew Rapids (locally also called "szypoty") are a series of small waterfalls and cascades on the Tanew River in the Roztocze region. On the gorge section, where the river's gradient is about 1 per cent, the Tanew overcomes 24 rock steps over a stretch of nearly half a kilometre. The steps are regularly spaced, perpendicular to the current and shallow.

Location and surroundings

The most beautiful section is located in the Solska Wilderness, south of Susiec (Susiec municipality, Lublin Voivodeship). Since 1958 the area has been protected in the "Nad Tanwią" reserve (about 41 ha), covering the Tanew's gorge through the Roztocze escarpment and the lower course of the Jeleń stream. The unique rock steps formed in the Tertiary period.
