Orłowo Cliff

The Orłowo Cliff is one of the most recognisable cliffs on the Polish coast, located in Gdynia in the Orłowo/Redłowo district, within the Kępa Redłowska nature reserve. It stretches for about 650 metres along the shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Location and surroundings

The cliff lies within the boundaries of the Kępa Redłowska reserve. It is built mainly of moraine clay of glacial origin. The cliff face recedes as a result of marine abrasion at a rate of about 1 metre per year.

Natural values

The cliff is divided into a dead part (with landslide forms overgrown with vegetation) and an active part (actively undercut by the sea). On the beach at its foot one can find igneous rocks (diorites, granitoids, porphyries) and metamorphic ones (gneisses, quartzites). Lignite deposits occur at the foot. The slopes are overgrown with, among others, butterbur and sea buckthorn (a protected species).

Practical

Next to the cliff stands the sculpture 'Blessing of the Sea'. The place is accessible on foot from the Orłowo district.
