Siedlec Desert

The Siedlec Desert is a small sandy desert within the village of Siedlec in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, with an area of aeolian sands of about 25 ha (the rest of the former area, about 30 ha, was afforested in the 1960s).

Location and surroundings

The site is located in the municipality of Janów, in Częstochowa County, on the Trail of the Eagles' Nests.

Natural value and origin

The dunes in the desert reach about 30 m. The sands have an interesting origin - they are a remnant of the sea floor from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, brought in by the ice sheet and then shaped into dunes by westerly winds at the end of the glaciation. Sand was extracted here until the 1960s, after which the excavation site was afforested with pines.

For tourists visiting the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura and lovers of natural curiosities.
