Kampinos National Park protects one of the best-preserved complexes of inland dunes in Europe. The dunes formed at the end of the Pleistocene (about 12,000 years ago) as a result of aeolian processes in the ice-marginal valley of the Vistula.
The park lies in the central part of the Mazovian Voivodeship, west of Warsaw. Characteristic dune formations can be observed among others in the area of Łużowa Góra and on Grochalskie Piachy (one of the largest areas of sandy dunes in Poland, in the northern part of the forest).
The dunes reach a relative height of up to about 30 m and take the form of arcs, parabolas, ridges and rises. It is the largest and best-preserved complex of inland dunes in Europe. In 2000 the park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
