Starczynów Desert

The Starczynów Desert is an area of sands of anthropogenic origin, located south of Bukowno in the Olkusz district. It arose as a result of intensive deforestation for the needs of mining (from the 13th century).

Location and surroundings

The site lies south of Bukowno, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in the region of historic Olkusz mining.

Natural values and origin

The desert formed as a result of human activity - the felling of trees for the extraction industry, which led to the exposure and movement of sands. Today the area has been almost entirely reforested (pine, birch) to protect Olkusz from drifting sands.
