Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Smolnik on the San

A wooden Greek Catholic church in Smolnik, now a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St. Nicholas, is one of only three surviving Boyko-type churches in Poland. In 2013 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Location and surroundings

It stands on the right bank of the San, in the heart of the Bieszczady Mountains, at the foot of Trohaniec, by the Great Bieszczady Loop road and near hiking and horse-riding trails.

History

The present temple was erected in 1791 - the year of construction is confirmed by Cyrillic inscriptions on the lintel above the entrance. According to archival materials, it is the third church built on this site.

What to see

The characteristic tripartite Boyko body with separate broken tent roofs. The original furnishings have largely been lost; the surviving elements are held in museums in Lviv and Łańcut.
