Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Turzańsk

A wooden church (originally Greek Catholic, now Orthodox) dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel in Turzańsk, of the Lemko type, inscribed in 2013 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Location and surroundings

The site lies in the village of Turzańsk, on the Subcarpathian Wooden Architecture Route (route IV, Sanok-Dukla).

History

The parish in Turzańsk was mentioned as early as 1526. The present temple was erected in 1801-1803, and in 1836 it was expanded with a vestibule and sacristy. The interior polychromes were made by Josyf Bukowczyk in 1898.

What to see

A tripartite Lemko body with three towers crowned with onion-shaped domes over the babynets, nave and presbytery. On the axis of the church stands a free-standing bell tower dated to 1817, considered one of the tallest in the Polish Carpathians.
