Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Owczary

A wooden church in Owczary (former Gorlice district) of the Lemko type (according to some classifications - Boyko), inscribed in 2013 on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 1995 it was awarded the Prix Europa Nostra.

Location and surroundings

Owczary lies in the Sękowa municipality, in the Gorlice district, on the Wooden Architecture Route.

History

The church was built in 1653 on the site of an older structure. Subsequent alterations: rebuilding of the presbytery (1701), addition of a tower (1783), expansion of the nave (1870). The interior polychromes were made in 1938. Comprehensive conservation took place in 1983-1985.

What to see

A tripartite body with a wooden tower over the vestibule; an 18th-century iconostasis painted in blues, reds and gold (including icons by Jan Medycki), side altars and an icon from 1664 from the original iconostasis.
