Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Brunary Wyżne

A wooden Greek Catholic church in Brunary (now a Roman Catholic church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary), of the Western Lemko type. In 2013 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Location and surroundings

Brunary lies in the Uście Gorlickie municipality, in the Gorlice district, about 33 km south-east of Nowy Sącz, on the Wooden Architecture Route.

History

The temple is dated to 1797. Its present shape is the result of a fundamental rebuilding in 1830-1831, when the church was expanded. It served Greek Catholics until 1947 (Operation "Vistula"), and since 1951 it has been used as a Roman Catholic church.
