Orthodox Church of St. John the Theologian the Apostle in Nowoberezowo

A wooden church (originally Uniate, now Orthodox) dedicated to St. John the Theologian the Apostle in Nowoberezowo, in the Białystok region. A branch church of the parish of the Ascension of the Lord in Nowoberezowo (Hajnówka deanery).

Location and surroundings

Nowoberezowo lies in the Hajnówka commune, in the Hajnówka county, within the Białowieża Forest.

History

The church was built in 1771 on a rectangular plan as a Uniate church; its founder was Izabela Branicka. After the Synod of Polotsk (1839) it became an Orthodox church. In 2023, more than 20 elements of a 17th-century iconostasis - considered the oldest known iconostasis in Podlasie - were discovered in the attic.
