Orthodox Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Puchły

A wooden Orthodox parish church dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God in Puchły, called the "Blue Church" due to its intense azure colour. It is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Podlasie.

Location and surroundings

Puchły lies in the Narew commune, in the Hajnówka county, by the Narew River, on the regional "Land of Open Shutters" route and the "Tree and the Sacred" route.

History

The first mention of the church in Puchły dates from 1578; its origins are linked to a legend about a 16th-century apparition of an icon of the Mother of God. The present church was built in 1913-1918 in the so-called Russo-Byzantine style with influences of Russian wooden architecture. It has been entered in the register of monuments (no. A-55) since 27 February 2003.
