Greek Catholic Church of St. Nicholas in Hrebenne

A wooden Greek Catholic church dedicated to St. Nicholas in Hrebenne, considered one of the most valuable monuments in the eastern part of the Lublin Voivodeship and one of the oldest three-domed churches in the region.

Location and surroundings

Hrebenne lies in the Lubycza Królewska commune, in the Tomaszów county, close to the border with Ukraine. The church stands on a high hill surrounded by monumental lime trees; the complex includes a belfry and a gate leading to the cemetery.

History

The Greek Catholic parish in Hrebenne was established in 1685. Various dates are given for the church's construction (1600, 1697, 1700, 1731, 1797); according to Jan Górak, 1685 is the most likely. In 1797 the narthex was rebuilt. After World War II the building was taken over by the Roman Catholic Church; it is now the seat of a parish of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
