Sanctuary of Our Lady of Częstochowa at Jasna Góra

Location and surroundings

The monastery complex rises on a hill in the centre of Częstochowa, surrounded by historic ramparts and fortifications.

History

The monastery was founded in 1382, when the Paulines were brought here. Its most famous treasure is the miraculous image of Our Lady of Częstochowa (the Black Madonna). In the 17th century the monastery was fortified; in 1655 it withstood the Swedish siege, which became one of the symbols of national resistance.
