Cistercian Abbey in Henryków

The Cistercian monastery complex in Henryków, founded in 1222 by Duke Henry the Bearded. The first nine monks arrived from Lubiąż on 28 May 1227. The abbey became famous as the place of origin of the Book of Henryków, which contains the oldest recorded sentence in the Polish language.

History

The monastery flourished during the Baroque period (17th-18th centuries). It was secularised by Prussia in 1810. In 1949 it returned to the Cistercians as a priory dependent on the abbey in Szczyrzyc.

What to see

The Baroque-Gothic church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist, the Piast mausoleum (chapel of St Mary Magdalene from 1753), the Baroque monastery complex, and the gardens.
