Basilica and Sanctuary of St Hedwig in Trzebnica

The Sanctuary of St Hedwig of Silesia in the former Cistercian nuns' abbey - the first female monastery in the Polish lands, founded in 1202 by Duke Henry the Bearded under the influence of his wife Hedwig. The Cistercian nuns were brought from Bamberg in 1203.

Architecture and cult

The three-nave basilica from the 13th century is 70 m long. The Chapel of St Hedwig (1268-1269) is one of the first fully Gothic buildings in Poland. The basilica houses the tomb of St Hedwig - a pilgrimage destination since the early 14th century.
