Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows in Jarosław

The Basilica of Our Lady of Sorrows with a Dominican monastery. The origins of the Marian cult date back to 1381, when shepherds found a figure of the Pietà on a pear tree. In 1421 a brick Gothic church was built, funded by Rafał Tarnowski.

History of the custodians

In 1629 Duchess Anna Ostrogska handed the church over to the Jesuits; its present late-Baroque form was given between 1696 and 1713. In 1755 the Jarosław Pietà was crowned with papal crowns. After the dissolution of the Jesuits (1773), the church was taken over by the Dominicans in 1777. In 1966 the church was granted the dignity of a basilica.
