Basilica and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sejny

A minor basilica, a former Dominican church, erected in 1610-1619 by monks who arrived from Vilnius in 1602. The founder of the monastery was Jerzy Grodziński. In 1760-1779 it was rebuilt in the Vilnius Baroque style.

The miraculous figure

The church houses a 15th-century Gothic figure of Our Lady with the Child - one of the few of this type in Europe. After the dissolution of the Dominican monastery (1804) the church became the cathedral of the Sejny diocese. The title of minor basilica was granted in 1973, and the figure was crowned in 1975.
