Cistercian Abbey in Wąchock

One of the most valuable monuments of Romanesque-Gothic architecture in Poland. The Cistercians were brought here in 1179 by the Kraków bishop Gedeon Gryfita from the abbey in Morimond. The stone abbey was built in 1218-1239 by the Italian workshop of Brother Simon, modelled on Tuscan architecture.

What to see

The church of St Florian and the Assumption of the BVM with the first use of cross-ribbed vaults in Poland, the chapter house, the refectory and the fraternia with a palm vault. The abbey was closed in 1819 and reactivated in 1951.
