Wawel Cathedral

Location and surroundings

The cathedral is located on Wawel Hill in Kraków, within the castle complex, on grounds inscribed on the UNESCO List.

History

The present, third cathedral on Wawel is a Gothic church erected from the 14th century onwards, with numerous later chapels. For centuries it served as the place of coronation and burial of the kings of Poland and of eminent Poles.

What to see

The royal tombs and the Crypt of the National Bards, the Sigismund Chapel, the sarcophagi of the rulers, the Cathedral Museum and the famous Sigismund Bell from 1520 on the Sigismund Tower (diameter 2.5 m, weight approx. 11 tonnes).

  • Admission to the main nave is free
  • Tickets required for the Royal Tombs, the Sigismund Bell, the Cathedral Museum and selected chapels
  • The tour including the Sigismund Bell lasts about 40 min
