Cathedral Basilica in Płock

Location and surroundings

The cathedral towers over Cathedral Hill (Wzgórze Tumskie) in Płock, on the Vistula, next to the former ducal castle. It is the oldest and most valuable church in the city.

History

The Romanesque cathedral was built of stone blocks between 1129 and 1144, funded by Bishop Alexander of Malonne, and rebuilt many times over the following centuries. It is the resting place of Poland's rulers.

What to see

The Royal Chapel with the sarcophagus of Władysław Herman and Bolesław the Wrymouth, and the crypt with the remains of the Masovian dukes; a richly appointed interior.
