Rozewie Lighthouse

The oldest operational lighthouse on the Polish coast, located on a cliff in the northernmost part of Poland. The tower is 32.7 m high, with the light reaching 83 m above sea level. The lighthouse has the greatest nominal range of all Polish lighthouses (about 26 nautical miles).

Location and surroundings

Rozewie (Władysławowo commune), on a high cliff above the Baltic, near Cape Rozewie.

History

The original tower was built in 1821-1822 and commissioned on 15 November 1822. It was raised in 1910 (by 5 m, with electrification) and in 1978 (by a further 8 m). Between 1875 and 1910 a second lighthouse (Rozewie II) operated alongside it. The lighthouse is associated with the figure of Stefan Żeromski (it bears his name) - the legend that he wrote his novel Wiatr od morza (The Wind from the Sea) here arose thanks to lighthouse keeper Leon Wzorek; in reality Żeromski merely visited the lighthouse.
