Hel Lighthouse

An octagonal brick lighthouse at the end of the Hel Peninsula. The tower is about 41.5 m high, with the light at about 40.8 m above sea level. Since 1929 it has been painted in white and red horizontal stripes.

Location and surroundings

Hel, at the end of the Hel Peninsula; nearby are beaches, the port and the Seal Sanctuary.

History

The first lighthouse on this site was built between 1806 and 1826 and commissioned on 1 August 1827. On 16 September 1939 it was blown up on the orders of commander Włodzimierz Steyer. The Germans rebuilt it in 1942, moving it about 10 m to the south-east of the original foundations.

A viewing terrace with a panorama of the Gdańsk Bay, the open sea and the town of Hel.
