Góra Szwedów Lighthouse

A decommissioned lighthouse located within the administrative boundaries of the town of Hel, on the Hel Peninsula, at the top of the Góra Szwedów hill. It is a historic structure of the Polish coast's lighthouse heritage.

History

The lighthouse was built in 1936; it replaced the older lighthouse in Jastarnia-Bór and operated on the section between the lighthouses in Jastarnia and Hel. It was fully automated, with an electric light and no permanent staff, which is why it frequently broke down (especially in winter). It served its function until 1990, when it was switched off, partly due to the development of satellite navigation and the closure of the surrounding military zone.

Characteristics

  • Steel lattice structure 17 m high, set on a 2-metre concrete foundation
  • Light height: 34.3 m above sea level
  • Former light range: 14 nautical miles (approx. 25.9 km)
  • It also served as an observation tower
