The cylindrical brick tower-lighthouse in Gdańsk's Wisłoujście Fortress, erected in 1482, is regarded as the oldest maritime lighthouse on the Polish coast. It served a navigational function, indicating the way to the port of Gdańsk, until 1758, when a change in the course of the Vistula and the formation of shoals (and ultimately the Westerplatte peninsula) moved the port entrance away from the lighthouse.
At the mouth of the Vistula into the Baltic, a wooden watchtower serving customs and navigational functions already stood in the 14th century. After destruction (the Hussites in 1433, a storm in 1465), a masonry, brick cylindrical tower combining the functions of a watchtower and a lighthouse was erected in 1482. It is the oldest structure of the entire fortress.
In 2018 the Wisłoujście Fortress was recognised as a Monument of History. After a thorough renovation completed in 2024, the structure was opened to visitors with a new exhibition. At the top of the tower there is a viewing platform with a panorama of Gdańsk and the Bay of Gdańsk.
