Gdynia Oksywie Lighthouse

A historic, no longer existing maritime lighthouse on the Oksywie Headland in Gdynia. It was the smallest lighthouse in the country - its tower measured slightly over 10 metres. Lit in 1877 (some publications erroneously gave the year 1887), it emitted a white flashing light repeating every 3 seconds, visible from a distance of approx. 8 nautical miles.

History

The lighthouse was extinguished in 1933, and in 1939 it was destroyed during the defence of the Oksywie Headland in September 1939.

Commemoration

On 1 October 2007, on the 120th anniversary of the lighthouse's commissioning, a monument being a 1:5 scale model of the lighthouse was unveiled at the Navy Cemetery in Gdynia-Oksywie, commemorating the historic structure.
