Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Oświęcim

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is a memorial and museum established on the site of the former German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz, which operated in 1940-1945. The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Location and surroundings

The museum comprises two main parts: Auschwitz I (the main camp) in Oświęcim and Auschwitz II-Birkenau located in nearby Brzezinka. The main car park and visitor entrance are at ul. Więźniów Oświęcimia 55.

History

The Germans established the camp in 1940. Auschwitz became the largest of the German concentration camps and extermination centres. The camp was liberated on 27 January 1945 by the Red Army - this date is observed as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

What to see

Preserved camp blocks with exhibitions, the gate with the inscription "Arbeit macht frei", the remains of gas chambers and crematoria, and the Birkenau grounds with the railway ramp and barracks.

For whom

Due to the nature of the exhibition, the museum recommends visiting by persons over 14 years of age.

  • Admission to the Memorial is free, but requires booking a free entry pass on the website visit.auschwitz.org
  • A guided tour with an educator-guide is recommended (a paid service)
  • It is advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes before the planned visit due to the security check

Seasonality and hours

Open all year except 1 January, 25 December and the first day of Easter. Closing hours change depending on the time of year.
