The State Museum at Majdanek - German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1941-1944) is the oldest museum institution in Europe commemorating the victims of World War II. It was established in the autumn of 1944 on the site of the former German concentration camp, commonly called Majdanek.
The museum is located on the outskirts of Lublin, on the exit road towards Zamość. The museum grounds cover approx. 90 ha.
The camp operated in the years 1941-1944. On the grounds there are gas chambers, a crematorium and execution ditches. The museum was created while the war was still going on, after the area was liberated.
On the grounds there are approx. 70 historic structures, including camp barracks, gas chambers, a crematorium as well as a Mausoleum with the ashes of the victims and the Monument of Struggle and Martyrdom.
