Westerplatte is a memorial site connected with the defence of the Military Transit Depot in September 1939 - one of the first battlegrounds of the Second World War. The area has the status of a Monument of History.
The Westerplatte peninsula is located at the entrance to the port of Gdańsk, in Gdańsk, Pomeranian Voivodeship.
On 1 September 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on Westerplatte; the Polish garrison defended the depot for 7 days. The Monument to the Coast Defenders was unveiled on 9 October 1966. Among others, the monument lists Hel, Oksywie, Westerplatte, the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk and the Gdynia scythemen.
The monumental Monument to the Coast Defenders, the ruins of the barracks, the preserved Guardhouse No. 1 (a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk), and the grounds of the former depot.
An open memorial area accessible to all visitors.
The grounds are accessible all year round. Guardhouse No. 1 is open seasonally (from the end of April to the end of September) - hours should be checked on the website of the Museum of Gdańsk.
