The Monument to the Ghetto Heroes commemorates the 1943 uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto and the Holocaust. It is one of the most important memorial sites on the map of Warsaw.
The monument is located on a square between Anielewicza, Lewartowskiego and Zamenhofa streets in Warsaw. Opposite the monument, on the axis of its main entrance, the building of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews was opened in 2013.
The monument was unveiled on 19 April 1948, on the 5th anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The author of the sculptures was Natan Rapoport (1911-1987), a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, and the architectural concept was developed together with Leon Suzin (1901-1976).
A monumental sculpture with a two-sided composition - the front side depicts the insurgents, the back the march to extermination. It is the site of the annual commemorations of the outbreak of the ghetto uprising (19 April).
